BBL Athletes Shone at the Tokyo World Championships

The World Championships in Tokyo (September 13–21, 2025) once again proved that Tipos Banskobystrická latka is a meeting regularly attended by the world’s best high jumpers. Several participants and winners of the event achieved outstanding results in Tokyo.

In the women’s competition, two familiar faces from the Banská Bystrica shared the bronze medal - world record holder, Olympic champion, and this year’s B winner Yaroslava Mahuchikh, together with last year’s winner Angelina Topić of Serbia. Both cleared 1.97m, but it was the young Serbian who celebrated more joyfully, as it marked her first-ever senior world championship medal. A heartwarming gesture came from Australia’s Eleanor Patterson, who finished fifth and supported Topić during the dramatic and rainy final moments of the competition.

Also making it to the final were other participants of this year’s Tipos Banskobystrická latka: Morgan Lake (7th place - 1.93m) and Michaela Hrubá (12th place - 1.88m). The qualification round, however, proved unforgiving for Liliana Batori (20th - 1.88m), Idea Pieroni (28th - 1.83m), Lamara Distin, and Britt Weerman, who failed to clear their opening heights.

The men’s final in Tokyo was dominated by Hamish Kerr of New Zealand, the 2023 BBL winner, who cleared 2.36m - the world-leading performance. Silver went to Sanghyeok Woo of Korea, this year’s Banská Bystrica champion, who once again confirmed his consistency with a jump of 2.34m. A major surprise came from Jan Štefela of Czech Republic, who claimed the bronze medal with a jump of 2.31m - the first-ever world championship high jump medal in Czech history. Last year, Štefela also competed in Banská Bystrica, where he cleared 2.24 m and finished fifth.
